The Smallest Cinema

Sarah Levine

Mother, school is counting mouths I have never opened: bedroom, greenhouse, cinema. Even our mouths have doors for birds to fly in and out. Mother, you had a hummingbird caught inside your smallest cinema, a bird with the strongest heart. Patter pitter. Your mouth fed songs into my ears before bed and I know I was loved in the house I grew out of.
