Lia Mastropolo’s “Skagway” is part of a project that uses
“borrowed” text from historical and environmental nonfiction writing and speaking about Alaska. For source
texts, she used oral interview archives, historical accounts, forest management plans, and other policy documents.
Specifically, “Skagway” utilizes text from Herbert Howe Bancroft’s History of Alaska (1885)
and Myrtle Ryan’s Diary (1900). The “borrowed” words are enclosed in single quotation
marks.
