The waiter comes to the table full of news;
bows joylessly, hesitates, stares at his shoes
just long enough to set the hushed scene in stone:
for the moment’s now his likeness, his alone
to mouth the unimagined—but expected—
bold flourishes the chef has resurrected
out of darkening pans with creepy ideas:
the bread, the pudding, the sauce—all sepias.
