There is a man at the end of my bed,
but not quite a man, what with his beaked face.
Is he one of Horus’s servitors
or a Venetian plague doctor?
Or perhaps poor Enkidu in the afterworld?
I ask him if he’ll step closer, into the light.
No, no, he says, not until you’re asleep.
